Privacy policy
Last updated: 29 September 2026
This policy covers the Cheap Pumps app for iPhone and Android and the website cheappumps.co.uk (UK Fuel Price Finder). Both are made by Jon Russell (JonDoesFlow), who is responsible for your information.
The short version: no account, no sign-up, no adverts. The app has no analytics or tracking. Your location is only used when you ask for it, to find your nearest postcode, and isn't stored. I don't sell or share your information.
What the app sends, and why
To show fuel prices, the app sends requests to the Cheap Pumps server at api.jondoesflow.com. Depending on what you use, a request contains:
- Nearby and Price Check: a postcode, search distance and fuel type, to find stations near that postcode.
- Journey planner: the start and destination postcodes and fuel type, to plan the route and find stations along it.
- Station details: the station's ID, to show its prices.
- Prices and News: the fuel type only, to show national figures and headlines.
These requests are used to answer your search and aren't saved to a database or linked to you. Like most websites and online services, the server and its hosting may keep routine technical logs (such as IP address, time and the address requested, which can include a postcode you searched) for a limited time, for security and troubleshooting. They aren't used to identify or track you.
Services the server uses
To answer requests, the server passes on only what each service needs:
- UK Government Fuel Finder: forecourt prices. No information about you is sent.
- Postcodes.io: turns a postcode into a map position.
- OSRM (router.project-osrm.org): works out a road route between two map positions, for the journey planner.
- Open Charge Map: finds EV chargers near a map position.
- News feeds (BBC News, Reuters, The New York Times, OilPrice.com): fuel news headlines. No information about you is sent.
Your location
The app only asks for your location when you tap Use my location, and only while the app is open. It is never used in the background.
When you use it, the app sends your position directly to Postcodes.io to find the nearest postcode, then searches using that postcode as described above. Your location isn't stored by the app or by the Cheap Pumps server.
You can say no, or change your mind at any time in your phone's Settings. You can always type a postcode instead.
If you've already allowed location, maps in the app show your position as a blue dot. That happens on your phone only.
Stored on your phone
To save you retyping, the app remembers a few choices on your device: recent postcodes, fuel type, search distance, journey start and end, EV cost settings and chart preferences. They stay on your phone and are deleted if you delete the app.
Maps and links
Maps are shown by Apple Maps on iPhone and Google Maps on Android, and their providers' privacy policies apply to map display. Directions open in your phone's maps app.
Some buttons open other websites, such as news articles and data sources. Those sites have their own privacy policies.
The website
The website works the same way: searches are sent to the same server to find prices. It uses a self-hosted, cookieless analytics tool (Umami) that counts page views and simple events, such as button clicks. It sets no cookies and doesn't identify you. The website has no adverts.
Children
The app and website are suitable for everyone. They don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Your rights and contact
Under UK data protection law (UK GDPR) you have rights over personal information about you, including asking what's held and asking for it to be deleted. As no account or profile is created, there's normally nothing to look up, but you're welcome to ask.
Questions about privacy: email jdrussell78@gmail.com.
If you're unhappy with how your information is handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new date.
